Christians, how do we get our brotherly accountability back?

I have found even in my close friendships, my friends can't handle any real accountability. They claim they want it, but you say one little thing, and they get so offended. I had a friend who said someone who criticizes her makes her feel like they are not acting out of love towards her. But I believe true love holds people accountable...and I don't mean holding old offenses over their head. I mean helping each other in your areas of weaknesses and showing your brother/sister when they're walking in the wrong direction...there is a lot of scripture about doing this, but it seems like people want nothing to do with that any more. I think that is how we have lost our effectiveness...we've all been silenced! So what can we do about it?
