Why can i hear noises in my house when i am home alone?

I will bet you it's a squirrel. :) Running around on the roof and through the gutters. Our Squirrels sound like they are moving FURNITURE in the attic! I thought we had ghosts! It could be something very simple to explain. ALSO Birds!
